Tutoring Services

At Cambrian College, we want every student to succeed. To make sure that happens, the Learning Centre provides free tutoring for a broad range of subjects.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I qualify to become a Student Tutor? What do I need to submit?

  • You need to have a grade of A or B in the course you would like to tutor and/or a professor’s recommendation, as well as a minimum of 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA).
  • You must be a registered, full-time Cambrian College student 
  • You must have a strong desire to help students succeed and a commitment of your time to help the students who are assigned to you.
  • You must hold excellent communication skills.

I have been a Student Tutor before; do I have to fill out the application again?

  • Tutors need to apply each term and receive approval before tutoring can begin.
     

What is the maximum amount of hours that I can tutor?

  • The contract for a Student Tutor allows up to a maximum of 20 hours per week
  • Tutors will only be paid for those hours booked by a learner rather than all time slots entered into the online schedule.
  • A Student Tutor can hold 2 jobs on campus as long as they do not exceed the maximum of 20 hours/week combined.
     

Once hired, how will I be notified that someone needs to be tutored?

  • You will be notified via TutorOcean that a student has booked an appointment with you. 
  • Review the appointment details and ensure the request matches your approved course/subject area.
  • Please note: some notifications are going directly to junk mail/spam; do not rely on your inbox for messages. Student Tutors are required to check other folders/junk mail for notifications until the issue is resolved.
     

Can I meet a Learner in person for an appointment?

  • Appointments may be conducted online or on-campus depending on student preference.
     

How do I get paid?

  • Submit either a void cheque, or Direct Deposit form. A Direct deposit form can be picked up at your local bank branch.
  • Confirm your SIN number with the Learning Centre Coordinator.
  • To receive payment for Tutoring hours, a timesheet reflecting completed appointments must be submitted to the Learning Centre Coordinator each week.
  • Payments will be deposited bi-weekly according to the pay schedule.
     

Do I get paid if my Learner doesn’t show up?

  • Learners are required to cancel appointments online at least 24 hours in advance of a scheduled appointment.
  • If a Learner misses an appointment, you will be compensated for your time. Please notify the Learning Centre Coordinator via email with details of any missed appointments.
  • If a Learner misses 3 appointments without prior notification, their tutoring privileges will be temporarily suspended. 
     

I am an International Student and I do not have a Social Insurance Number (SIN). How do I get one?

Please inquire online or in person at one of the local Service Canada Centres. For additional assistance, contact Cambrian International.
 

The Learning Centre Coordinator is never available at the same time I am; how do I make contact?

The Learning Centre Coordinator is available to respond to email messages between 8:30am - 4:30pm. If the Learning Centre Coordinator is not available, they will respond as soon as possible.
 

The Learner is expressing frustration and anxiety regarding his/her course/program. What can I do as the Student Tutor to help?
