Introduced in Ontario in 2016, Treaties Recognition Week, is a response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action to educate Ontarians and to honour the importance of treaties and their relevance today.

The James Bay Treaty - (Treaty No. 9) is an agreement between Ojibway (Anishinaabe), Cree (including the Omushkegowuk) and other Indigenous Nations (Algonquin) and the Crown (represented by two commissioners appointed by Canada and one commissioner appointed by Ontario). The treaty, first entered into in 1905-1906, covers the James Bay and Hudson Bay watersheds in Ontario, about two thirds of the province’s total landmass. The Robinson Huron Waawiindaamaagewin is an initiative of the Robinson Huron Treaty signatory First Nations, adhesions and beneficiaries to create a deliberative body mandated to address many long standing issues that face the Treaty Signatories, in accordance with the traditional world view, cooperative philosophy, and historical alliances of the 21 member First Nations.

Art Petahtegoose, Elder and Councillor from the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, shares his knowledge and perspective of the Robinson-Huron Treaty of 1850 and the kind of understanding that needs to be acknowledged, in regards to treaty-making, in order to move forward with Canada.

About us: Whose Land is a web-based app that uses GIS technology to assist users in identifying Indigenous Nations, territories, and Indigenous communities across Canada. The app can be used for learning about the territory your home or business is situated on, finding information for a land acknowledgement, and learning about the treaties and agreements signed across Canada.

Our Mission: strives to create and foster conversations about the history of colonialism, Indigenous ways of knowing, and settler-Indigenous relations, through educational resources such as our map and Territory Acknowledgement Guide. We strive to go beyond old ways of talking about Indigenous people and to develop a platform where Indigenous communities can represent themselves and their histories on their own terms. In doing so, Native Land Digital creates spaces where non-Indigenous people can be invited and challenged to learn more about the lands they inhabit, the history of those lands, and how to actively be part of a better future going forward together.
