Fake news and disinformation are increasingly spreading on the internet, especially on social media. But how can you recognize fake news, and why is it being shared so widely? This theme presents the issue and gives some tips on how to protect yourself from fake news and disinformation.

This theme examines all aspects of policing in Canada, from crime prevention strategies to police-community relations and recent debates about defunding.

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental illness that comes from exposure to trauma so intense that a person fears they will be killed, seriously injured or violated. This exposure could be directly experienced or witnessed by the victim. The traumatic experience imprints on the individual so profoundly that they continue to re-experience the trauma in the form of flashbacks and nightmares. Many Canadian soldiers exposed to combat will experience PTSD upon their return to the country. This theme examines the consequences for them and their loved ones, as well as initiatives providing support to those impacted by PTSD in the military.

The War on Terror, also known as the Global War on Terrorism and U.S. War on Terror, is an ongoing international military campaign launched by the United States government following the September 11, 2001 attacks. The targets of the campaign are primarily Sunni Islamic fundamentalist armed groups located throughout the Muslim world, with the most prominent groups being Al-Qaeda, the Islamic State, the Taliban, Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, and the various franchise groups of the former two organizations.

"Wrongful convictions undermine the two prongs of the criminal justice system's legitimacy," states a 1992 report prepared by the Library of Parliament. "If someone is wrongfully convicted, that person is punished for an offence he or she did not commit and the actual perpetrator of the crime goes free." Each miscarriage of justice deals a blow to a society's confidence in the legal system, experts say. This theme put a spotlight on cases where the courts got it wrong.
