Shelters are full and the homeless end up trying to salvage an existence on the street. But many of these troubled people were functioning members of society until something happened in their lives. Job loss, a lack of affordable housing, mental health issues, violence or abuse in the home are just some of the reasons people end up homeless.

Internet addiction, though not officially recognized by health-care authorities, has been defined in several studies as an impulse-control disorder. It has been characterized by an overwhelming desire to stay online and impairs an individual’s ability to function on a day-to-day basis. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental illness that comes from exposure to trauma so intense that a person fears they will be killed, seriously injured or violated. This exposure could be directly experienced or witnessed by the victim. The traumatic experience imprints on the individual so profoundly that they continue to re-experience the trauma in the form of flashbacks and nightmares. Many Canadian soldiers exposed to combat will experience PTSD upon their return to the country. This theme examines the consequences for them and their loved ones, as well as initiatives providing support to those impacted by PTSD in the military.

This theme focuses on the experiences lived by refugees and asylum seekers adjusting to life in Canada while also examining the ambivalence felt on the issue by some Canadians. “Refugees are people who have fled their countries because of a well-founded fear of persecution. They are not able to return home. They have seen or experienced many horrors. A refugee is different from an immigrant. An immigrant is a person who chooses to settle permanently in another country.
